This day in Alternative Music History

public image ltd

On this day in 1981, A PiL (Public Image Ltd) show in New York goes awry.  The band agreed to place in place of Bow Wow Wow (!) knowing they hadn't rehearsed enough to do the show.  PiL ends up playing the entire show  behind a video screen and Johnny Lydon (nee Rotten) tells the crowd to throw things at them.  A riot ensues and about 12 people are injured.  PiL considers the show a success, seeing as the caught the entire incident on film for an upcoming movie.  Whatever happened to punk?!?
